Joshua House
Overcoming a negative past & laying a foundation for the future

"Without support I'll fall flat on my face."

A large portion of unchurched young adults who desire to make positive changes in their lives and grow in their relationship with God live in an environment that is hostile to Christianity. The Joshua House allows young adults to make a break from the past and begin a new future. Homelessness, living with roommates who deal drugs, and peers who discourage Christianity have been real issues for these young adults.

"I was into drugs. A lot of drugs and heavy drinking. It is so important for me to be living with Christian guys because I need someone to hold me accountable. On my own, I have a tendency to allow myself to get away with things I really shouldn't do."

In their new environment, they have a family of Christian men who encourage them to grow in their relationship with God. They can create a new network of friends and learn life skills never modeled to them. While some have unstable backgrounds and need big brothers, those with leadership potential have opportunities to be mentors.

The four to eight month program features goal setting, spiritual teaching, and life skill training facilitated by mentors and resident leaders.

"We are family to these guys. Our goal is providing the stability needed to get on your feet and go in the right direction. We've already seen fruit in their lives,"
-Joshua House leader Steve Dunn.

History

15-20 residents each year since 1995

1999 campaign reaches goal of paying of Joshua House deed

From 1995 to 1998 two different houses were rented until the purchase of the current facility. In October 1998, the Source Ministries made the down payment on the Joshua House. Over the past two years, extensive restoration has taken place on the house.

  • 1995: Source begins Portland House with no budget (house is rented, bills are paid by staff and residents who live in house)
  • 1997: Elliot House is rented (after landlord sells Portland House)
  • 1998: Joshua House is acquired (after landlord sells Elliot House)
  • 1999: Joshua Hs Contract for Deed is paid off
  • 2000: Nine different men (including leaders) have lived there this year as of June (three new residents in May)

Note: the FUSE Outreach House provided several young men with temporary housing.
